The Grupo FENIX
manufactures and installs small photovoltaic systems in remote
Nicaraguan villages. The systems typically include a 35watt
pv module, fluorescent lamps, a deep-cycle storage battery,
charge controller and wiring. They make most of the extra components
from locally available parts. They sell these systems to cash-poor
rural dwellers on a long-term time payment arrangement geared
to their limited means. Other FENIX renewable energy activities
include designing, installing and maintaining village scale
PV systems for rural health clinics and training land mine victims
to work in the solar energy field. Future plans include developing
an affordable but highly-efficient 12 volt refrigerator that
can be made in Nicaragua.
