Hugos '97 - our vote
Hugo '97 Nomination

For half the book, I was sure Holy Fire by Bruce Sterling would win this year's Hugo Award. Instead of the plot developing though, only more description, philosophy, and setting continued devolving the overall impression into obscurity.

In spite of Bujold's previous accomplishments, I thought Memory was horrible. And I couldn't even bring myself to read Blue Mars. Starplex was much better than Sawyer's last effort, The Terminal Experiment, but still not that great.

That leaves us with Remnant Population winning somewhat by default. Beyond doubt it's a good bookbut not quite up to the high standards more typical in Hugo winners of the past. Why wasn't Expiration Date even nominated?
