The Black Company

Glen Cook
Internet Top 100

Somewhat monochromatic (black) but engagingly entertaining. No sense of good vs. bad but more bad vs. badder vs. baddest. And within these categories, we find numerous nuances of negativity and shifting allegiance.

The vivid fantasy conjurations supersede the need for much plot but an intriguing story line adds mystery, suspense and interest. What's really happening is never what it appears on the surface though in a larger sense the same thing is always happening: power struggle.

Memorable, colorful (from black to the "elixir of nightmare") characters expand social dynamics and encourage more appreciation for our own seemingly ho-hum world.

Mainly escapist entertainment - don't expect much intellectual challenge or insightful wisdom.
