This winner of
the first Hugo award set the stage for some great books to come and no doubt
inspired many of the authors of those books. And after all these years it still
stands out as one of the best.
A murder mystery (of sorts) set in the future when advanced extra sensory perception makes crime almost impossible - there hasn't been a murder in over 70 years. As difficult as crime is to commit, discovering and convicting proves even more difficult. Enough plots and subplots, deceptions within deceptions, and mysteries within mysteries to completely perplex a conventional Sherlock Holmes, and keep readers mesmerized.
Riveting action and challenging unknowns keep you on the edge of your chair trying to discover and understand. A few inconsistencies detract a little (Click if you've already read this book.) but the overall book is so good, they make little difference.
A good story entertains, a great one also inspires a deep look into our lives, dreams, and values. The Demolished Man has psychological drama, deep insight, creative inventiveness, a consistent underlying humor and compassion a classic work that jump-started modern science fiction. Refuses to sink into black-vs.-white stereotypes, courageously looks at some deep issues like who and what we really are and concludes with an immensely compassionate view of human nature and potential.
