Dinner At Deviant's Palace

Tim Powers
P.K.Dick 1986

A burned out LA of the future without electricity, telephones or fossil fuels; a burned out populace sunk in superstition, ignorance and poverty; a burned out cult consuming alienated stragglers; a lost love captured by diabolical forces: the perfectly bizarre setting for another delightfully bizarre Tim Powers novel.

A spiraling journey into deeper and deeper dangers as pieces of the mystery unfold. At one point, "He walked slowly for each step required an individual choice between continuing and fleeing."

Lots of excitement but not just an action novelit has a good degree of intellectual depth and inspiration. The external journey parallels an inner transformation out of self-centered absorption toward an authentic yet totally street-wise compassion.

Not quite at the level of Expiration Date but better than Anubis Gates and well worth reading. Highly recommended.
