Double Star

Robert A. Heinlein

Hugo 1978

Strong argument that given the right environment and expectations, the most egocentric and irresolute impostor can rise to greatness. The theme of "self-fulfilling prophesy" acted out on inter-galactic scale. To become something, we have to act or pretend in the beginning. If we do a good enough acting job, people will start believing it and we start to become what we pretended. The power and strength of thought too often minimized.

Whimsical and light story not without an endearing charm but lacking much depth or riveting excitement.
