The Dragon Waiting
John M.Ford
World Fantasy 1984

Intricate intrigue, complicated plans and adventures in a realistic, alternative 15th Century.

Well documented and researched, The Dragon Waiting provides a vivid history lesson along with the entertainment. Already knowing the historical background would really help though. Otherwise, the numerous characters and political events swim in a perplexing background and easily become confused.

Familiarity with Richard III, Louis XI, the Medicis, et. al. would help with understanding the book's more subtle themes. On the other hand, you may find inspiration to go back and read more history. It was interesting to learn that December 25th was considered the birth of Mithras, "born to bring new life to all men" and people drank bull's blood and strong wine.

It seemed overly violent and blood-thirsty but perhaps that was the predominant theme of the times. The queen starts the main characters off on their quest with these words, "No go; you are commanded to England. There kill, like good men you are." And in a discussion about a couple, "Does every marriage in the world have troops behind it? 'Above the rank of Baron, just about all'..."

I had trouble with the vampire theme. As with Anne Rice's books, I have a hard time meeting the challenge of finding sympathy for this kind of character and "life-style".

Overall, probably the most intellectual of the World Fantasy winners. Challenging, deep, and imaginative but a little short on character development and suspense.
