Dreamsnake

Vonda McIntyre
Nebula 1978, Hugo & Locus 1979

Not for those afraid of snakesor possibly a great antidote for overcoming a fear of snakes. In either case, an original and friendly book.

Another post nuclear war, devastated and primitive world settingI hope the frequency of this doesn't correlate with its likelihood! It's just a way of dealing with our unconscious fears, right??

The real theme here is caring and compassion. The main character, Snake, personifies the best friend we all wish we had or cherish if we do. A healer and wonderful person dedicated to helping others.

The story itself has plenty of excitement and fascinating action but it's getting to know Snake that makes reading it a memorable experience.
