Dune
Frank Herbert

Nebula 1965, Hugo 1966, Internet Top 100, Locus All-Time '75, '87, Top 20

What can you say about Dune without trivializing? If you haven't read it, please do! It's one of the best books in any genre, not only science fiction.

I suspect that this book has had a much larger cultural impact than many would realizeespecially in the environmental field. It popularized the term, ecology and vividly imparted a sense of planetary awareness, the experience of our world beyond political boundaries.

It has everything: psychological depth and lesson in the Bene Gesserit teachings, high adventure and suspense, mind-expanding fantasy, lovable characters, insightful reflections that apply to contemporary situations. I can't recommend it enough.

Though not quite on the same level, the five sequels are all well worth reading. Dune only tied for the Hugo award with This Immortal and none of the sequels or any of his other books won either a Hugo or Nebula. It makes me wonder about politics in Hugo and Nebula award voting circles.
