Glimpses
Lewis Shiner
World Fantasy 1994

On the surface, a look back into the 60's and a feverish search for the lost vision and idealism. Just slightly deeper, a rambling contemplation of relationships - male/female, child/parent.

On the lost vision of the 60's: "The late sixties were about the notion of an infinite expansion of possibilities...The problem was greed and hatred. The answer was peace and love...We knew we could change the world" but "hope and promise turned to ashes, grass and LSD turned to coke and heroin" and now "Money is all that anyone cares about", "Oil tankers are spilling oil all over the world's beaches, and nobody stops them because we don't want to give up our cars."

On relationships: "...men and women have their own languages. There are some of the same words in both of them, but they still come out differently...Women share secrets, men insult each other." Some cynicism and despair but ultimately positive and wholesome. "She came into my arms an kissed me in a way that turned by brain to white light."

Interesting behind-the-scenes details of old Rock Star's private lives and enough soul-searching speculations to inspire some deep thinking. "How can you ever know how much is true for everyone and how much is only true for yourself?"
