Godbody

Theodore Sturgeon

Deeply religious book - highly recommended especially for Christians but also for those with other or no spiritual beliefs. But watch out if you're attached to a specific church which our book calls "the most efficient guilt-factory ever known on this planet." And also watch out if you feel prudish about sexuality. There's lots of sex but nothing prurient - rather sex as deeper communication, sex as spiritual practice.

In-depth character studies bring to life voices that begin to seem as familiar as neighbors. This somehow seems to make the extraordinary events seem normal and ordinary, gives a modern, relateable feel to an old and well-worn story. In his introduction, Robert Heinlein remarks on how you can open this book anywhere, read three lines, and know which of the main eight characters is talking.

Filled with wisdom, compassion and love: really a wonderful little book. Here are a few of my favorite quotes: "any person who cannot be by himself, it's because when he is by himself he thinks he is not in good company." "Almost any word we speak to anyone is a way of trying to explain to them who we are, and almost always we fail." ". . . champagne at a wedding and port wine at a funeral, are all that is left of fundamental Christian worship!"

Great Introduction by Heinlein and Afterword by Stephen R.Donaldson.
