The Jealous God
Syneca

Highly evolved artistic imagination in an intricate, fascinating onion of a story that slowly resolves leaf by leaf. Racing suspense, perplexing super-natural mysteries, and intense romance blend together into a genuine "page-turner".

A few situations undermine the believability and these surface the reading awareness from immersion in the story. (Click here for examples.)

The ending really fooled me. I thought the plot was going to decend into a trite, black-and-white conclusion without subtlety. Instead, a fairly deep message comes across without too much moralism.

Though not the best first novel of all time, definitely a good one - I'm looking forward to more books from this author.
