Memory

Lois McMaster Bujold
Hugo '97 Nomination

Excruciatingly slow start filled with soap-opera banalities. It would be easy to skip the first 200+ pages and not miss much.

Not recommended for first-time Vorkosigan readers I think someone would have to already be a fan to stick with this one. Not much more than a pre-interest in the familiar characters sustains the readability for long. Of course, if you're already under the spell and relate to Miles and company as near-relatives, you'll probably want to check in and see what they're up to now.

There's really only one simplistic scheme/plot by one person that poses any mystery; but, from the first, it's obvious who's responsible. 462 pages but no surprises.

The cover is great art but deceptive advertising. It shows hand and air blasts, fire and adventure. During the entire story, however, not a shot is fired.
