More Than Human

Theodore Sturgeon
Internet Top 100, Top 20

The next step in human evolution we've evolved for thousands of years, who thinks we'll stop the process now? And since we are evolving, why not do it consciously? Here we have a classic masterpiece leading the way into the depths of this field of thought.

And beyond thought. As in the case of the character, Lone, we could take the ideas and throw the words away. Words, even insightful words of wisdom, can only point us toward the truth. If we mistake the words for the reality, they quickly spring up into a prison that blinds us from the true experience we all seek.

A fascinating story that simultaneously entertains and challenges assumptions. Why do we all have this need to feel superior to others? What is healthy aloneness? Togetherness? What is a valid basis for morality and ethics?

More than a book, I would call this a true work of art. Wonderful symbolism and imagery. (cf, "It was cold at the hidden foot of the dwarf oak and as dark as the chambers of a dead man's heart.")

Written in 1953 but feels as up-to-date as if someone wrote it last month, this is an important book to read.
