Moving Mars

Greg Bear

Nebula 1994

"Hard" science fiction attempt to make situations believable. Succeeds to a surprising degree considering the magnitude of the event our imaginations are challenged to accept. As almost always the case with this approach though, action and excitement tend to degrade in direct ratio to the amount of technical details described (unless you're a physicist or similar persuasion in which case the level of detail may inspire wonderful experiments and insights).

The main strength of this work is the development of the character, Casseia Mujumdar. Her personality blooms into a person you feel you know, admire, and possibly even love. The story line itself starts slow but in the concluding chapters reaches moving heights.

Good preparation for visualizing the colonization of Mars which may not be that far in our future. Easy to imagine how it could inspire children to work toward and actually take this step into the future.

Parental discretion: nothing objectionable for children or teenagers (actually promotes some positive sexual values-a rare event in modern literature or movies) but would most likely be quite boring for all but the most scientifically-minded.
