The Snow Queen

Joan D. Vinge
Hugo & Locus 1981, Internet Top 100

Lyric fantasy of a world caught in a cataclysmic ecological cycle. Power and strength vie with ambition and corruption while ingrained forces of nature move to sweep away the influence of human will.

Just enough adventure to maintain a steady level of excitement, just enough magic to stretch our perceptions, just enough mystery to strongly grip attention.

Somewhat disconcerting how strong, powerful, intelligent and heroic the women characters manifest while only one of the men (Miroe Ngenet) seems to possess much integrity or courage. The male protagonist, Sparks only slightly rises above contemptible. The women also have mean spirited and darkly negative traits but they mainly seem strong while most of the men almost habitually grovel. Perhaps this aspect in this year was part of a cultural rebalancing encouraging more true gender equality.

In any case, this doesn't detract from the book and its haunting beauty. Highly recommended.
