Ender's Game Discussion

"This is one of the best sci-fi books of all time. My uncle turned me on to it when I was 12 years old and now, 7 years later, it is stilll my favorite sci-fi book. Speaker for the Dead was O.K but the rest of the series was a big disappointment. Ender's GAme was so much the quintessential sci-fi books that I guess Card had a tough job living up to it." - Vreader 6/7/98

I frequently wonder if the quality of Card's books fell off so much not because he couldn't do it; but rather, because of selling out to the publishing companies and their mandate to crank out words per dollar. Steve 6/7/98

"I'm a huge Ender's Game fan, actually I love all the books about Ender, so when someone told me that there is a movie coming based on the book I was extremly interested. Could someone really make a (good) movie based on such an extremely well-written book? Could they get all the details? Is it possible?" Tor 1/21/98

Possible - if they do make a movie, I hope they do a good job. It deserves special treatment. - Steve

"Even though i read this novel 2 times, i don't really know what is going on. Can someone please tell me what the story is about?" - Saifkhan 12/29/97

You must have figured out enough to like it or you wouldn't have read it twice! What's it about? I would say about growing up, about aggression, compassion, strategy. About fear of the unknown and the confusion acting on fear can cause. What did it mean for you? - Steve 1/4/97

"Do you possibly know where I can recieve a good thesis statement or prewritten essay on enders game throught the internet?"

"Jeez, Louis. The Homecoming Saga didn't fall flat! It's just a completely different kind of book. Where those books are more mythological, the Ender series is hard SF. They are completely different kinds of books. Get your genres straight. Besides, Henlein didn't just write Starship Troopers. He wrote Stranger in a Strange Land, too. A completely different, sociological book."

You're right. My point was just that while I loved the Ender's series, I was really bored with the Homecoming Saga. I don't think it had anything to do with genres, probably more with the economics of needing to crank out books. Did you really like the Homecoming Saga as much as Ender's Game? Steve

Actually, I do. Really, I think it's becuase it's a different kind of book. I would say though, that the entire series isn't quite as good. I reall only liked the first two a lot. This is because, I think, I'm just interested in cool characters. Ender and Peter and Valentine fascinated me as much as Nafai and Elemak did, so I stayed interested. Also, I honestly wanted to see if the Oversoul could succeed. I honestly don't know if Mr. Card needed to make more money on books. However, the only thing I can add is that many of his other SF books are more like the Ender Series. I wonder if you liked Wyrms?

I did like the first Homecoming book quite a bit and wasn't too bored or I wouldn't have kept reading. I think I was just disappointed because Ender's Game was so good and I was expecting more on that level. It would be hard for anyone though to maintain that high of a standard Ender's Game won both the Hugo and Nebula and still stays right near the top of the Internet 100 votes. Steve
