Manda Wilderness Project
How You Can Help
Three brothers set Manda Wilderness Project up about five years ago.
The project is based in the North-West corner of Niassa
Province in Mozambique.
The aim of the project is to establish a community game reserve. All
profits from the reserve will be ploughed directly back into the community
for projects such as schools, wells, mills etc.
To help make the reserve work we have set up a small tourist lodge on
the shores of Lake Malawi, but because of the tremendous logistics involved
it is difficult to get fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs in on a regular
basis.
We are therefore trying to start a project in which three local villages
will start growing certain crops, which the lodge will then guarantee
to buy. It is through small projects like this that we hope to demonstrate
to the community how they can directly benefit by the success reserve.
The community has till now relied solely on hunting and fishing, but
as wildlife numbers fall, and fish are over harvested the area will soon
face a crisis. We will be introducing new skills, and food sources into
the area, with the additional advantage of relieving the tremendous strain
being put on the once abundant natural resources.
We are now trying to collect equipment and seed donations, to see what
will grow best in the light soils and sometimes harsh climate. If you
have any stock or any vegetable, fruit, or herb we would be very grateful
if you could donate them.
